Upgrades, New Terrain and Added Spaces at Idaho Ski Areas Welcome Skiers

Idaho, revered by winter outdoor enthusiasts as the soul of skiing and snowboarding, is often considered the birthplace of the American Ski Resort and is home to the nation’s first chair lift.  With more than 28,000 vertical feet and 20,000 skiable acres, Idaho boasts 18 ski areas of varying characteristics and offering a wide variety of services such as  nordic trails, terrain parks, cat ski trails, heli-ski opportunities and tubing hills.  Idaho is a destination ski mecca for those seeking crystal blue skies, fresh powder and no crowds.  Here’s what’s new about Idaho ski areas this season:

Sun Valley Resort – Sun Valley, Idaho
America’s original ski resort located in Sun Valley, Idaho kicks off it’s 78th year with several updates.   The Sun Valley Snow/Sports School will introduce a ‘Terrain Based Learning Program’ tailored for early learners and intermediate skiers and borders.  Traditional teaching methods will be combined with the Adventure/Discovery Model .

Sun Valley’s ‘Dollar Mountain’ has quickly become ‘Park Central’ for children and families and will feature a new 620 ft. long ‘SUPER PIPE’ with a 22 foot high wall, North America’s largest pipe.

A new lift ticket will be added to the variety of passes currently available.  The new ‘Young Adults Pass’ is available at $ 1199 for the season for skiers and snowboarders 29 years and younger.  As well, an new pass has been created giving unlimited access to Sugar Bowl & Royal Gorge Resorts Sugar Bowl & Royal Gorge to Sun Valley skiers/riders holding a Full Season or Sun Plus pass.

The ‘U.S. Revolution Tour’ will once again return to the slopes of Sun Valley March 3-7, 2014.  The tour has proved to be a progressive venue for today’s top junior riders to take the competitive stage in half-pipe, slope-style and ski-cross.  The tour is designed as a stepping -stone for athletes transitioning from competing at the grassroots level to the elite level.

Sun Valley’s ‘Pete Lane’s Mountain Sports’ will introduce the new ‘Wintersteiger Mercury Machine’ one of only 11 in the U.S. and the only one in Idaho.  This new tuning machine enhances performance on the mountain by improving turning qualities, creating a better grip on hard slopes for increased safety keeping edges sharper for a longer period.

Schweitzer Mountain Resort – Sandpoint, Idaho

Schweitzer Mountain Resort is kicking off it’s 50th Anniversary year with  a  1 + million dollar infrastructure expansion and many resort enhancements.   Schweitzer is also spending capital on cutting a new F.I.S. homologated downhill course, new progression terrain park and a new sun deck outside of the popular après ski spot, ‘Taps Lounge.’

Schweitzer’s new downhill course is located on Stella, crews widened the Shortcut Trail to 30 meters to connect upper Cathedral Aisle with the lower section of Zip Down.  The new start lets racers start on a steeper pitch, allowing them to maintain a higher rate of speed suitable for downhill racing.

Schweitzer’s new terrain park, Southside Progression Park, will replace Starfish Terrain Park and will be located next to The Stomping Grounds Terrain Park where Crystal Run is currently.  The new progression park will be larger and offer a great number of features.

In the village, Schweitzer added a new 50’ by 28’ sun deck  outside ‘Taps Lounge’.   Among other improvements,  Schweitzer has added a new groomer to it’s fleet, will roll out a new website this fall, is strengthening the wireless internet throughout the village and has upgraded the electrical system on Musical Chairs.

Silver Mountain Resort – Kellogg, Idaho

Silver Mountain Resort is home to the ‘worlds longest gondola’ and the nations only “Snow, Splash & Golf” Pass providing season pass holders unlimited access to ski and snowboard the mountain, surf and splash at ‘Silver Rapids’, Idaho’s largest indoor water park and golf at Galena Ridge Golf Course.

Updates this year include two new intermediate runs  – ‘Skier’s right of Moonshine’ off Chair # 4, and  ‘Bootlegger’  bringing total runs to 74.  In addition ‘Gold Pan Alley’ a children’s adventure trail has been expanded and the seasonal locker room expansion in the Mountain House Lodge has been completed.    Additionally, an extensive summer and fall campaign of brush and alder removal and thinning of glades will open more terrain and reduce lift lines.

Brundage Mountain Resort – McCall, Idaho

Skiers and riders will appreciate Brundage Mountain’s on-going brush cutting efforts. This year’s targeted the lower half of the front side runs, with significant trimming performed on Main Street, Lower Alpine, Griz, Badger, Red Fox, Bear, Lower 45th Parallel, Sensation, Celebration and Lower Temptation.

Brundage has relocated its main terrain park to Kickback and changed its approach to park construction. The Kickback Rail Park will focus exclusively on box and rail features. The elevation and aspect of the new location allows features to be built earlier in the snow season and moving the park on the south side of the mountain will provide more sunshine and better photo ops for freestyle riders.  In the lodge guests will notice enhancements to the third floor cafeteria where the serving space has been redesigned to provide a more convenient experience and reduced wait times.

Soldier Mountain Resort – Fairfield, ID

Soldier’s Cat Skiing is back in action! As southern Idaho’s only Snow Cat Skiing operation they are excited to invite you to come experience their new 11 passenger snowcat carriage.  Inside you’ll find a  flat screen TV to enjoy on your way up the mountain, an optional over night stay in a yurt, and fresh powder all day long at only $275 per person.

Soldier Mountain Ski Area is excited to announce that they now have a new trail map and run names for the mountain’s 36 ski runs, named after local hero’s, original mountain skiers, and legends.

Lookout Pass Ski and Recreation Area – Wallace/Mullan, Idaho

Located on the Idaho – Montana border Lookout Pass Ski and Recreation Area receives an average annual snowfall of 400+ inches each season.   Improvements this year include the expansion and relocation of the ‘Huckleberry Jam’, family-friendly terrain park.   To grow participation in the park it has been relocated to the other side of ‘Huckleberry Ridge’.    In addition ten super easy new features have been added to introduce ‘Free Style Skiing’ and ‘Snowboarding’ to all ages and levels of skiers.

Grand Targhee Resort – Teton Valley (Idaho Wyoming Border)

Situated on the western slope of the Tetons in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and accessible only through Teton Valley, Idaho, Grand Targhee Resort is proud to be celebrating its 45th Anniversary.  Grand Targhee’s Youth Ski and Snowboard Lease Program offers discount ski and snowboard packages for kids.  Parents can carve out their own ski days at Targhee when youngsters enroll in the Youth Multi-Weekend programs.  During the five week program, kids can have fun on the slopes, make friends and learn to glide with Grand Targhee’s professional ski and snowboard instructors.  Check out their ski and stay packages, here.

Pomerelle Mountain Resort –  Albion, Idaho

Celebrating its 50th Anniversary Pomerelle Mountain Resort is located in the Sawtooth Mountains just 12 miles from Albion, Idaho.  With 24 expertly groomed runs, 2 terrain parks,  a vertical drop of 1000 ft and an annual snowfall of 500+ inches.

Lost Trail Powder Mountain  (Idaho – Montana Border)

Proud to celebrate its 75th Anniversary this year, Lost Trail Powder Mountain was very busy this summer and fall adding hundreds of new acres of terrain and thinning and expanding more in-bound areas all over the mountain.
